At last, the photo art book Intimate Portraits for Women, The Art of Winifred Whitfield is in print.

Dimensions 11x12.5, Hardcover with dust jacket, Press printed, 104 pages

ISBN 9780-578-53943-59000

$350.00

In the Forward by K.D. Kragen, philosopher of art and published arthor, he writes:

"In Winifred Whitfield's Intimate Portraits for Women, she demonstrates how works of art, whether visual or literary,

are always part of a community of arts and artist. These works are lucid examples of autonomous art. That is,

the artworks featured in this collection stand on their own as iconic and emotive. Like elegant poetry

these images communicate their own vision and emotion, visual intensity, fantasy and story; yet, they also happily

elicit the response of others who likewise see and think, weave and dream and create.

Adding to these gifts, Winifred Whitfield perceives her subject matter with a great intuitive depth as well as an elegant

visual simplicity. Bringing magic realism to the photo-visual arts, her works move from simple human subject

matter to complex story, psychological drama, fairy tale, fantasy, legend.

Imagine mixing the literary genres of hard science fiction and high fantasy, and you will begin to have a feel

for Winifred's Art. This artistic fusion manifest itself not just in terms of the individual works she creates, but

also in terms of the way she sees life, the way she perceives reality on multiple levels - history as both past and

future, the individual as both material and immaterial, truth as both real and personal, all imbued with spirit.

As with all art, Intimate Portraits for Women is as much about the artist Winifred Whitfield, her creativity, as it

is about the aesthetic world of her works of art and its affect upon her viewers and patrons.

I have had the priveledge of meeting some very special people recently.

Their names are David Hunt and Michelle Rumney. They are kind, generous and multi talented. I will send you to her website, his blog and you will have a glimmer of their depth. I have met them to date only via internet. They live in La Herradura, Granada, Spain.

Room on the Edge

Michelle is a photographer, fine artist and life coach, with a base of study and influence in Neuro Linguistic programming or NPL for short.

OKSO.com

David runs web media agency OKSO.com who produces internet media marketing materials, DVD's, Pod Cast, videos, slideshows etc. David also recently founded Illuminatus.TV, in collaboration with Master Photographer, mentor and trainer Martin Grahame-Duhn in London. David suggested that I be interviewed for this professional forum educational website, and he suggested that Michelle Rumney conduct the interview.

Illumanatus.TV

Michelle Rumney contacted me and suggested that I download Skype. We then scheduled the interview. The interview was an hour long. Michelle is so easy to interact with. After the interview, we spent an additional hour visiting just getting to know each other better. No doubt our connection will continue and just as soon as we can connect in Spain, London or New York, you will be seeing a very beautiful portrait of a very beautiful person. I am now working on some other things with Michelle and David which I will share with you in the weeks to come.

Michelle has several interviews posted on her site and trust me, you will fine them all interesting. Below is the link to my Interview. I hope you enjoy it and feel free to post comments.

Winifred in New York - catching up!

I have been in New York for 5 weeks now - only one to go. I's been a fantastic trip. I was able to attend several scheduled activities with Professional Photographers of Greater New York - great workshops. Boy does this group like to eat!

I have eaten as some great restaurants - French, Italian, this past weekend Russian. To counter balance I walk and walk and walk. So, I have not gained an ounce. It was on this trip that I first walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. I did it on one of the many blue sky beautiful fall days I've had during this trip. The weather has been fantastic. I am so pleased about this. It is why I choose October to come.

I have shot so much video on this trip. One of the photographers in my group showed me how ot use the video component of my Canon G10. Turns out, however, that though easy to play back and post on FaceBook, it is difficult to edit the MOV file which is created. So, I purchased video file conversion software 2 days ago so I can convert to WMV files and edit in Windows Media Player. Editing is pretty time consuming but it will be fun to make kittle shorts and have them finished properly.

It was a wonderful opportunity to photograph Lisa Ciaciao and to then create her art portraits. Lisa is quite an artist herself - accomplished in singing, piano, acting and dance, at only seventeen. She had no problem going within, to assist me in creating great story telling poses. She didn't even mind climbing high up in her neighbors 200 year old oak tree with a full length dress on. She was an absolute charm to work with - certainly one of my very favorite people. She responded to my every request. As a result she has magnificant portraits for the rest of her life, to mark and to remember this time in her life. THANK YOU LISA.

Winifred's Yellow Brick Road to New York

It is so interesting to stand back and watch events in your life unfold. The dots keep building, perhaps it's the yellow brick path giving direction to my business expansion into New York. I have no doubt it will become a successful and thriving venture. I have a friend Betsy Hill, who lives in Manhasset, NY. She framed the portraits I created for her family, at The Frame Shoppe She ask it's owner Al if they would display some of my work there. It is a beautiful Frame and mirror gallery. Al said "YES", so on by most recent trip to New York, he selected his choice of large canvas images to display. Of course his frame selection for my work is "to die for". What a wonderful way to be introduced to a community. Thank you Al and Betsy!

I was a speaker March 28th at The Professional Photographery Society of New York State Convention

which took place in Albany, NY. It was outstanding. The team of Kelvin Ringold, Owen Kassimir, and Debra Woodard did an amazing job. It was PPSNYS largest and most successful convention in quite a number of years. Feedback on my presentation was excellent and I certainly enjoyed my time there. Can you believe, I didn't have a camera with me!! With more than 300 photographers in attendance, there were photos being taken all over the place depicting all the fun we were having. The moment I returned to New York City, I went to B&H to purchase a Canon G-10 which I can now keep in my purse. What an awesome little camera. I had an opportunity to do shoot a couple of days later and guess what? That is the camera I used. The images are fantastic!

I returned to Poulsbo to find a feature article in Poulsbo Life published about me From Wall Street to Poulsbo Wall Street to Poulsbo and Back might have been the more appropriate caption. Well, not back to Wall Street - just back to New York.

Now, to get my farm sold.

Intimate photography for women is a real passion of mine. For me Intimate photography is not boudior photography but personal art for a woman. I am just as much concerned about expression and the artisic quality of the image and the story - moreso, than the amount of skin showing. Lately I have started painting clothing on women when a little too much skin was reveiled. Creating the vision of the image before I shoot is the real key for creating empowering and beautiful images. It also cuts studio time by three quarters because I know exactly what I am going for.

No matter your age or size, I can create a beautiful and very flattering intimate photograph for you.

Hair by Michael at Cilla's Saloon on Jensen Way, Poulsbo

The experience in the studio is so enjoyable. The image immediately above is Emily Boberg-Courts who owns Dolphin Dance in Poulsbo.

Her studio is next to mine. She teached women sensuous dancing and pole dancing. Something really interesting happened

when she came for her photo session. I have owned this note/music background

for 2 years and have never used it. On the day Emily was in my studio, something told me to use it.

When we saw the final images, we both loved it. It just made those fabulous shoes POP!!

In addition it added all around interest ti the image. Then Emily said to me

" I never told you this, but I studied violin for 12 years. It is meaningful to me to have music as my background image".

It could never have been a coincidence. I love it when that happens!!

This is the first lesbian couple I have had the opportunity to photograph. When people see this portrait on my gallery wall, I am asked if they are sisters. They were married in a non legal ceremony in WA State only a few days before this shoot. It had been a beautiful wedding in Gig Harbor. I had the pleasure of creating a portrait collection for them.

From my clients comments, this seems to be one of the very favorite images in my gallery.

Woman and girls of all ages love this Hollywood style portrait. Tessa loved

the 40's and 50's. she said to me "when I was groeing up there was a portrait of my granfmother in our home.

Tor me it was my grandmother. Tessa said. "I loved that portrait and Iwant to create my heirloom portrait now

which which I can enjoy now, and which will be handed down for generations to come."

At the same time, we created the following Pin-up for Tessa. Tessa is Fabulous!

I went to visit Kim at her home one day. I wanted to take a look around to see what might be an appropriate setting and backdrop for her portrait. Kim has a huge garden of strawberries. I have been hearing about them from her daughter Michelle Cho for a very long time. I hear they are so sweet and delicious. I ask Kim if I could have a few plants. She was happy to share. Kim grabbed a pot and led me to just the right spot to collect plants. She squated in a way I wish I could and proceeded to pull plants from her winter garden for me to take with me. I stood watching her in the beautiful afternoon light and thankfully, the light went on in my head. Excitedly, I thought - this is the portrait. I ran to my car to get my camera and then took about a dozen photographs of her. This for me is also an intimate portrait - a portrayal of Kim - Kim with self, expressing joy and love in her life. I painted the image digitally in Corel Painter and Kim and her family treasure the portrait of her forever.

Intimate Portraits for Women creates idealized portraits for women as they would like to been seen and remembered. Studio locations include, New York, and Poulsbo, Washington which is located in Kitsap County. It would be wonderful to create elegant portraits for women in Vancouver BC as well. It is rare to find this style of elegant and luxurious portraiture but I love it. Seattle portrait shoots are primarily done in the Poulsbo location but may be done onlocation in seattle as well. An elegant portrait is one of the most precious gifts you may give to oneself or another.

I have shame. I have literally abandoned by blog page. At first the excuse was the holidays, then the beauty - though inconvenience, of the heavy snow fall - and now it's FACEBOOK. I had no idea about the majic of the secret world hidded in FACEBOOK and I am loving it! I am now connected with 125 of my fellow photographers from all over the world, and local friends as well. All this in 2 weeks. I will be speaking in New York at the Professional Photography Society of New York State in late March. It is the president of that group - Kelvin Ringold who strongly encouraged me to join Facebook, in order to further promote the event. I would say that he did me a big favor.

I will be in New York next week, January 31st to February 6th. While there I will attend the Professional Photographers of Greater New York convention. I hope it will not be too cold - but it is cold even here - perhaps that's because it is WINTER!

Don't forget. Winifred Whitfield is now on Facebook. Please add me as a friend.

Since I was headed to Tuscany anyhow, Elizabeth Ciaccio ask if I would go to Bologna, Italy to photograph her daughter who was studying there. Bologna boast the oldest university in the world! I agreed to do so. Teressa Ciaccio is a junior at Brown University and is studying Italian from September through December 2008. These are just a few of her favorite images from the shoot.

Winifred Whitfield attends Simone workshop in Tuscany

Winifred Whitfield had the opportunity to attend a workshop in the Tuscany region of Italy. led by internationally renown and highly celebrated portrait artist, Louise and Joseph Simone - and she took it!

It was my first visit to the Tuscany region and what an amazing trip it was. It was truly an experience of a life time. We were a group of 12 portrait photographers. The accomodations were superb. We stayed in a magnificant villa Poggalia , not far from Certaldo. The architecture of the medival towns, the landscapes and the views from our windows were breath taking. The food, the wine and significantly the warmth and hearts of the Italians and special friends, Roberto, Paula, and "Franco the Magnifico" we called him. will long be remembered. Great food, lots of wine surrounded by beauty and new friends. What a trip.

I have easily 1500 images. I hardly know what I want to show you. I think I will show you the land. The following is a view from my villa window.

The following three images were shot at stops along the road. At the moment, I an not sure exactly where I was.

One night as we were in the van headed home, I started to play with my camera. I dropped it to about a 30 second exposure, pointed toward the car lights on the road, and slowely wrote my name in with my lense pointed todard the light. The following is one of my favorites.

Microsoft Teams with Winifred Whitfield for Camel Talk

When it came to collecting camel sounds for its upcoming video games, Microsoft teamed with Winifred Whitfield for camel talk. Peter Comley, their senior sound designer contacted me via information he found on the internet. For 10 years, I owned Gobi, a Bactrian camel and Butterscotch a Dromedary camel. Peter and I went to Port Orchard, WA, to meet with the camels, now owned by Mandy and Pete Werbelo, for a "chat".

Peter explained to the camels his need for their voices and how they would be used. (Butterscotch left, and Gobi at Peter's shoulder.)

...and then Gobi had quite a bit to say.

Intimate Portraits for women Create Portraits of Emily and Asley

Grandparents Yvonne and Donald Knerr of Poulsbo, WA were very excited about be visited by both of their grand-daughters, Emily and Ashley, from Vermont, both at the same time! They are recently out of college, Ashley graduated just this year. Yvonne knew that she would not soon again have this pleasure. She also know that this would be the time to have a very special portrait created for their daughter Dana, mother of the girls. Yvonne had seen portraits I had created for her next door neighbor Legina Priest, and she knew she wanted Intimate Portraits for women to create portraits of Emily and Ashley. Everything was scheduled prior to the girls arrival in town. I scheduled a consultation with Yvonne, Emily and Ashley at my Poulsbo showroom gallery, primarily so that Emily and Ashley would have some idea what we were working towards. We also discussed, hair, make up and clothing. Simple dresses would be just fine. The portrait session was not with out it's moments of fear and drama as Ashley (right) felt her dress and her face were not pretty enough. After reassurance from sister Emily and of course me, we proceeded. I promised Ashley that they would both look beautiful in their portrait. I decided to connect them and to bring their hands into the portrait with a long silk shawl which also just happened to hide that part of the dress which Ashley did not like. After shooting this pose to my satisfaction.

I then let Emily and Ashley know that if they had another pose in mind, as sisters sometines do, I would work with them to capture it as well. And indeed they did have a few ideas. I was convinced, when we completed the session, that I had portraits which they and I would love. With only 3 days left in town and a very busy schedule, I wanted the girls to see the images quickly. To my surprise, their favorite portrait came from the first pose I shot. I thought that pose might be more sophisticated than they might like, which is why I offered the additional options. But no - they chose from the first pose we shot. A day or so later Yvonne, their grandmother, would get to see their selection and perhaps have a different idea. Again, without hesitation, their favorite, and my favorite was her favorite as well. More that that, we had a grandmother's tears. How proud Yvonne was that she would soon be giving this amazing gift to her daughter - a gift of personal art which will be treasures for a lifetime. Of course, Yvonne and Donald have a copy of the portrait for themselves to fit in with their many unique antique and vintage possessions. Warmly, Winifred

Elizabeth Hill is a Managing Director of Financial Assurance Inc. in New York, a leading financial guaranty company located across the street from the Museum of Modern Art..

When I was in consultation with Elizabeth Hill, regarding the style of wall portrait she wanted, she requested something unusual. Elizabeth said to me. "I would like to have a portrait in which I am receiving a blessing." I told her I could do that. From my yards and yards of luxurious fabrics, I fashioned her dress, selected appropriate earrings, made a delicate head dress and placed a silk shawl around her to fit with the rather Renaissance portrait look I would attempt. Elizabeth then demonstrated the style of hand position whe wanted to depict receiving a blessing. I fine tuned her lighting and pose and then shot for expression. At the end of the shoot, I made a selection of her images for her to view. We both agreed on the image which would form the basis for her portrait. All of this took place the day before I returned to Poulsbo, Washington. In my Washington State studio, I replaced the background from a collection of images I maintain and then took the image into Corel Painter to digitally paint it, which included painting in the sheer white sleeves. It will be printed on canvas, varnished, and beautifully framed to form a treasured piece of personal art in Elizabeth's home - forever.

Winifred Whitfield's Voyage to Poughkeepsie

My visit to upstate New York was not what I thought it would be - it was better.

First the Shuttle from Prospect Park to #4 train to Grand Central Station. That worked. Then enter Grand Central Station and a young man immediately offered to take my small but heavy suitcase up the tall flight of stairs. Accepted - Thank you. Then the majesty of Grand Central.

I purchase my ticket for the train which would begin Winifred's voyage to Poughkeepsie, NY - Track 30.

While waiting in line, I glanced near me and saw a most incredible being. With my ticket now in hand, I approached him and ask why he was dressed so beautifully that day.

I am in New York for "Fashion Week" he repiied. "May I take a photo of you I ask." The light was pretty terrible for a photo and I did not have my flash with me. He was very receptive to having a portrait created - even under these circumstances - I told him I was a professional. "Let's just use the counter light to light your face." " Like this he said", as he struck a portrait pose. "Perfect", I replied. The station was so busy with hundreds of people streaming throughout the station, but as you can see, we were given this moment - this very rare moment when there was no one else in view. We exchanged informtion and said good -bye. I hope to see him again.

I then boarded my train on track 30 for Poughkeepsie, where I would be met at the station.

A comfortable hour and a half later friends picked me up.

After purchasing necessary food and beverage we head toward their home. Along the way, they pointed out the deteriorating but still absolutely amazing remains of the old Bennett College for Girls. I have enhanced this image to make it look the way it felt to me. Built in 1890, it closed in 1977. If you are anything like me you will want to know more about it so I have included one of many links I found.

Oh, the stories I bet it could tell.

Intimate Portraits for Women goes Bi-Coastal

Welcome to my new website and to my new BLOG. Everything is a new adventure for me. My life is a constant adventure. This my newest adventure has me traveling between Poulsbo and Seattle Washington area of the country to New York. In both places I am creating beautiful and soulful Intimate Portraits for Women.

I think I am more process driven than goal driven. I am in New York today - the 4th of July, taking a moment to see if indeed I can do this thing call BLOG. This is my very first blog post. Why did I not take my camera out with me today to capture festive holiday images which I could have posted? Why - because it's a heavy professional camera and I did not want to carry it. I must get one of the great consumer cameras that I can throw it into my purse.

I am in New York because I now have an office and a studio in New York. Intimage Portraits for Women is bi-coastal now. This is really very exciting for me. So if you would love to have a really beautiful intimate portrait created please contact me so we can schedule a consultation. I will be in New York this time until July 11th and will return again in August. I will let you know exactly when.

Last night I proudly received the news that I had been included in a special 4th of July Best of F-Stop Beyond composit interview. If you are not familiar with it, it is an exciting forum to get to know the more personal side of a significant group of photographers from all over the nation. I am pleased to have been included amongst them.

Best of F-Stop Beyond

You may hear my full interview if you go to my Media Kit listed under Feature Articles.

Tomorrow, I will be doing a portrait shoot in upstate New York. Tonight I packed three lights, light stands, lots of drape and cloth, my camera and a reflector. Then I pretended I was going to take it out the door, get on a subway to Grand Central Station, then take the train to Poughkeepsie, NY. Well, I could hardly move my gear. That's when I decided that a beautiful dramatic outdoor portrait would be just fine - instead. You will see in a couple of weeks. I hope you had a wonderful and safe 4th of July.
